Capable of accelerating from rest to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds before reaching a maximum speed of 157 mph; achieves 31.4-32.5 mpg on the combined cycle, and emits 204-212 g/km of CO2 (range of figures due to differing wheel-tyre choice). On sale now, priced from £45,945.

  • When Porsche set about making a compact SUV the brief was clear: to make the only ‘sports car’ in the sector. With its strong performance and dynamic handling the Macan S exceeds all expectations
  • A strong and light monocoque structure underpins the sporty personality of the Macan, with a low centre of gravity in particular aiding its dynamic performance. This has been achieved through a range of measures, including intelligent use of different metals and larger items such as the bonnet and tailgate being fashioned from aluminium
  • The Macan S uses multi-link suspension on the front and rear axle, with coil springs and twin tube dampers as the standard specification. As an option, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system is available, offering a choice of three settings: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. A further option is Porsche air suspension, which includes height adjustment, self-levelling and the PASM system. This system provides three levels of ride height, the highest (+ 40mm) intended for off-road driving, while the lower setting at (-15mm) makes for an even sportier drive on-road
  • The twin-turbocharged, 2,997 cc, water-cooled V6 engine that powers the Macan S delivers 340 hp between 5,500 rpm and 6,500 rpm, and 460 Nm of torque between 1,450 and 5,000 rpm. Notable features include variable valve timing and valve lift (VarioCam Plus), and high-pressure direct petrol injection
  • The transmission in the Macan S is the Porsche twin-clutch seven-speed automatic gearbox (PDK), with manual control of gearshifts via the gear selector or paddles fixed behind the steering wheel. The engine’s output is delivered to all four wheels via Porsche Traction Management (PTM), an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch: drive is sent first to the rear wheels, with the split to the front axle calculated via a range of parameters. An off-road button on the centre console switches all the relevant systems to a traction-orientated mode
  • The Macan S is a particularly impressive performer in its market segment: it’s capable of accelerating from rest to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds, before reaching a maximum speed of 157 mph. The fuel consumption figure is 31.4-32.5 mpg on the combined cycle, and it emits 204-212 g/km of CO2 (range of figures due to different wheel-tyre choice)
  • The braking system of the Macan S features 350mm vented discs on the front axle and 330mm on the rear, gripped by aluminium monobloc calipers of six-piston and four-piston type, respectively
  • The lower silhouette of the Macan helps it cut through the air more efficiently than a typical SUV, and with a flat underbody and active radiator shutters also optimising airflow the coefficient of drag is just 0.36 – excellent for this type of vehicle
  • The interior of the Macan S offers an appealing mix of high-set cabin typical of an SUV but with a lower, sportier driving position than is usually associated with this type of vehicle. The sloping centre console also echoes the firm’s sports cars, and there’s a wide range of comfort, safety and infotainment options on the options list, including advanced driver assistance systems
