Gerry McGovern, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “New Discovery is a beautifully proportioned and sophisticated premium SUV. This compelling and versatile vehicle has been refined in every detail, enhancing its characterful exterior and hugely versatile interior to ensure the Discovery maintains its position as the most capable and family-friendly full-size SUV in the world.”

Discovery DNA design cues, including the clamshell bonnet, the stepped roof and the highly visible C-pillar remain, but the new model delivers a bold exterior evolution. New Discovery features a series of carefully considered design enhancements to provide a more assertive presence on the road, with body-coloured front fender vents accentuating the waistline.

New signature LED headlights distinguish New Discovery with the Daytime Running Light signature set lower into the lamps, creating a more purposeful look. New Discovery’s premium appearance is further enhanced by exquisite detailing on the Matrix LED units, which can be optimised for town, country and motorway driving, ensuring the driver always has the best visibility. An animated sweeping indicator function features on the front and rear lamps, providing heightened visual sophistication.

Between the distinctive headlights, the new front grille design echoes that of New Discovery Sport, helping create a consistent and recognisable Discovery family face. More purposeful and with a large honeycomb design, it is finished in the same Atlas colour as the Discovery script on the bonnet. Revised front bumpers feature a new, wider body-coloured graphic for a more purposeful and dynamic appearance.

At the rear, all Discovery models feature distinctive new LED signature lamps, which are joined by a Gloss Black panel across the back of vehicle. This new panel reflects Land Rover’s reductive design philosophy, incorporating the Discovery script to provide a clean rear graphic. Mirroring the pattern of the new headlights, the new LED tail lights make New Discovery instantly recognisable while a new lower bumper design features on all versions.

New Discovery is available with six alloy wheel designs and four finishes creating a total of 11 wheel options ranging in size from 19-inches* to the new 22-inch Technoviper option, which features a choice of Diamond Turned finish with Dark Grey contrasting paint or a fully Gloss Black finish.

Customers can choose from 12 premium exterior paint colours, including new Hakuba Silver, Lantau Bronze and Charente Grey finishes. All Discovery, S, SE and HSE models feature Silver Atlas detailing on the grille, tailgate finisher and badging scripts.

Contemporary interior

Inside, New Discovery benefits from significant enhancements that accentuate its premium position and Land Rover’s respected craftsmanship. With versatility at its core, the interior combines a full-size seven-seat layout with a spacious, modern cabin design that incorporates Land Rover’s cutting-edge Pivi Pro infotainment to reaffirm Discovery’s standing as the ultimate large family SUV.

Alan Sheppard, Director, Interior Design, Land Rover, said: “By optimising comfort and interior space and offering unrivalled technology solutions, we’ve ensured New Discovery is the most capable and connected full-size seven-seat premium SUV. Enhanced quality and premium materials add to the enduring family appeal of this legendary model.”

A new four-spoke steering wheel provides a more open and elegant design thanks to its more compact airbag. Polished metal-finish spokes give the wheel a rugged architectural look that contrasts with premium touch-sensitive controls. These hidden-until-lit switches put New Discovery’s extensive and intuitive infotainment functions at the driver’s fingertips. A redesigned centre console houses the new 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen, which provides class-leading capability and ease of use. The updated heating and ventilation controls are operated using a sophisticated hidden-until-lit interface. These premium design elements offer unrivalled functionality and are framed by a pair of vertical polished metal-finish stanchions that run from the face level vents at the top of the dashboard to the transmission tunnel.

The revised transmission tunnel is home to the ergonomically enhanced tactile gear selector, the rotary controller for Terrain Response 2 and the infotainment volume control. In addition, a deep storage compartment provides generous stowage for drinks bottles and features a sliding cover to keep valuables out of sight. At the base of the centre console is the conveniently located wireless charging pad to keep smartphones topped-up.

The second-row seats have been carefully redesigned for enhanced comfort. Improved lateral support, longer thicker cushions and careful seat profiling all contribute to improved under-thigh support and improved posture for occupants. The relocation of the second row air-vents from the B-pillars to the centre console further improves comfort. This change has allowed Land Rover’s designers and engineers to achieve a significant increase in airflow to second-row passengers, who have their own hidden-until-lit ventilation controls and power supplies on the redesigned centre console.

Land Rover’s designers have focused equally on every seat, with a range of new finishes that position New Discovery at the pinnacle of the large premium SUV sector. There are five different colourway finishes to choose from for the Grained and Windsor leather options.

For the first time on Discovery, customers can choose a sustainable non-leather upholstery. The new Luxtec material is made of a lightweight recycled polyester microfibre and combines a soft, luxurious feel with the durability and tear-resistance to cope with the demands of active family living.

All fabric-trimmed front-row seats now have eight-way power adjustment, while 14, 18 and 20-way adjustment is available with the Grained and Windsor leather options. The availability of heated and cooled seats, plus massage functionality in the front row, ensure occupants are always comfortable, whatever the conditions outside.

New R-Dynamic

The new R-Dynamic model brings a more assertive character and purposeful stance to New Discovery with a series of unique design elements, including purposeful Gloss Black and Shadow Atlas exterior accents on the outside and two-tone leather and contrast seat stitching on the inside.

At the front, the R-Dynamic derivative features a new front bumper with lower, wider emphasis. A wider body coloured graphic and Gloss Black detailing to the side vents, grille and bonnet badges combine for a more purposeful and dynamic appearance.

New R-Dynamic models are distinguished at the rear by a body-coloured insert between the tailpipes while the wheels feature a Satin Dark Grey or diamond-cut and clearcoat finish. The sporty R-Dynamic is available with a Narvik Black contrast roof.

Inside, New Discovery R-Dynamic features a distinctive and sporty duo-tone leather finish composed of Light Oyster centre inserts and Ebony Black bolsters, providing a purposeful and premium environment.

With unrivalled family-friendly flexibility and interior space, New Discovery is the ultimate, versatile full-size seven-seat premium SUVs. A series of enhancements deliver increased functionality, improved comfort and 21st-century connectivity, while the innovative interior continues to offer comfort without compromise.

New Discovery’s trademark stadium seating ensures all seven occupants enjoy excellent forward visibility, while the rearmost seats have been designed to accommodate adults up to 1.90m tall (the so-called 95th percentile), so comfort is assured in every seat.

The redesigned second-row seats now have a longer base, increased cushion thickness and revised profiling, which contribute to enhanced under-thigh support and improved posture. Crucially, the changes preserve the generous legroom available for passengers travelling in the second row. As before, the second-row seats can slide forwards and backwards by 160mm, allowing passengers to optimise luggage space and rear legroom as required.

Alan Sheppard, Director, Interior Design, Land Rover, said: “Family friendly versatility has always been at the heart of the Discovery experience and New Discovery comfortably takes every activity in its stride with generous cabin space and outstanding connectivity. Our premium SUV is in its element on family road trips, when towing and carrying bulky loads or just simply the daily commute.”

Comfort is further enhanced by the relocation of the second row air-vents to the redesigned centre console. By moving them from the B-Pillars, Land Rover’s designers and engineers have more than doubled the airflow to the second-row passengers. This change in location has also resulted in an overall improvement in airflow of 27 per cent for the four-zone climate-controlled heating and ventilation system.

As ever, class-leading interior storage is part and parcel of New Discovery’s trademark versatility. Land Rover’s designers have engineered and maximised every spare millimetre of space to provide unrivalled stowage throughout the interior. In total, customers have up to 41.8 litres of storage available over 14 different cubbies, gloveboxes and storage trays.

The redesigned centre console now features an optional wireless charging pad in front of the revised gear selector, beside which is a deep cubby hidden by a sliding panel. It can accommodate up to four iPads or a pair of two-litre drinks bottles. Further evidence of the thought that’s gone into New Discovery includes the new touch-sensitive climate control panel on the centre console that lifts to reveal 1.4 litres of hidden stowage space for smaller items such as a smartphone or wallet.

The rear of the driver and front passenger seats now feature single hard-cased map pockets, plus the option of innovative Click and Go tablet holders and USB-C charging sockets. As before, both front and rear passengers benefit from large lower door stowage that can accommodate two-litre bottles.

Occupants travelling in row three haven’t been forgotten. There are individual storage areas on top of the rear side panels and cup holders located to the side of the seat cushions. USB-C charging points are available, so those sitting in row three remain connected at all times.

There are up to four 12V sockets and as many as nine USB-C charging points across all three rows of seats, ensuring New Discovery can comfortably cope with the demands of the most connected families, allowing passengers to recharge their smartphones or tablets at the same time.

As before there are five ISOFIX mounting points, making it possible to fit child seats in the third row, and heated seats are available in all three rows. Heated and cooled front climate seats with massage function and 20-way adjustment are also available.

The seat layout itself can be controlled using Land Rover’s state-of-the-art Intelligent Seat Fold technology, which can be reconfigured using the central Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen. Alternatively, the second and third-row seats can be folded while standing behind the vehicle by using switches located inside the luggage area. There are also conveniently located switches on the C-Pillar that allow adjustment of third-row seats from the rear doors.

This versatile technology uses a series of small and efficient motors that can fold the third-row seats in as little as 12 seconds. Weight sensors in both the seats and seat belt buckles are able to detect when a seat is occupied. The intelligent system can also determine potential clashes between seats, automatically re-adjusting to prevent any collisions. New Discovery not only provides premium comfort for all seven passengers, it delivers this with a total load volume of 1,231 litres behind the second-row seats. In this five-seat configuration there is enough space to fit a standard size domestic appliance, such as a dishwasher or washing machine. This is made easy by the large boot opening, which measures 854mm high and 1,150mm wide. As ever, the loadspace can be easily and quickly configured to carry items of all shapes and sizes. If more space is needed for even larger and bulkier items, then folding the second-row seats provides up to 2,485 litres of carrying capacity. Even with all seven seats in place, there is still a useful 258 litres behind the rearmost seats, which is enough for a set of golf clubs or three cabin bags.

Even New Discovery’s cleverly engineered single-piece tailgate delivers unrivalled versatility as a result of its wide aperture and the Powered Inner Tailgate. This innovative feature incorporates an additional fold-down section that is deployed when the tailgate is opened.

When in place, the 285mm-long panel is able to support a maximum load of 300kg, making it the perfect place to enjoy a picnic or to take off muddy boots. It can also be left in its raised position when the main tailgate is opened, to act as a load retainer to prevent loose or unsecured items from falling out.

The powered tailgate can be opened remotely using either the key fob or gesture control*, both of which raise the boot and lower the inner tailgate panel. Customers can specify a choice of new and existing accessories. New items include Tailgate Event Seating featuring Ebony Windsor leather and a durable aluminium frame, an Inflatable Waterproof Awning which can be erected in five minutes and a Seat Backpack. A Pet Access Ramp, Portable Rinse System and rugged load space liners stay on the accessories list.

*Gesture tailgate comes as standard on HSE and is available as an option on other derivatives

New Discovery introduces a trio of straight-six Ingenium engines, both petrol and diesel, featuring 48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology for enhanced efficiency, performance and smoothness.

The new engines are available alongside Land Rover’s four-cylinder P300 Ingenium petrol powertrain and with a new intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. Allied to the latest powertrains, the new driveline provides customary Land Rover performance and capability with reduced fuel consumption.

The new straight-six engine family was designed and developed in-house. The advanced diesel is available in 249PS (183kW) and 300PS (221kW) outputs, while the powerful petrol delivers 360PS (265kW). The six-cylinder engines feature Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology that provides immediate power delivery and enhanced efficiency. The D250 and D300 six-cylinder Ingenium diesels feature lightweight aluminium construction with a low-friction design and replace the previous SD4 and SDV6 diesels. Intelligent 48V mild hybrid technology ensures the new engines meet the most stringent global emissions regulations and deliver improved responses.

By harvesting and storing energy generated during deceleration, this system redeploys it to assist the engine when accelerating, providing the engines with six-cylinder performance and four-cylinder efficiency. The clever set-up also delivers more refined operation of the Stop/Start system.

All New Discoverys with six-cylinder Ingenium engines feature an advanced driveline which optimises the torque split between front and rear axles, using a range of sensors to distribute torque to suit the conditions. The new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system maximises traction, on-road dynamics and driveline efficiency, resulting in improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions in normal driving, with no compromise to Discovery’s trademark all-terrain capability.

Ian Hoban, Director, Powertrain Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Discovery has always delivered incredible versatility and our latest family of Ingenium engines, with their advanced aluminium construction and low-friction design, offer even better performance and refinement. Mild hybrid electric vehicle technology features across the Discovery family and our pioneering 48V system improves the driving experience, by harvesting energy otherwise lost when slowing down and redeploying it when accelerating, for maximum efficiency.” In combination with the MHEV system, the new six-cylinder diesels also feature a pair of close-coupled series sequentially-arranged turbos to maximise heat delivered to the catalyst, to reduce the time it takes to warm up and optimise efficiency. The turbos feature electric variable nozzle turbines for precise control and immediate responses, allowing the new engines to deliver 90 per cent of their peak torque in just over a second.

State-of-the-art low-friction steel pistons are joined by a new high-pressure fuel injection system, which operates at up to 2,500 bar and is capable of five injections per cycle with quantities as small as 0.8 milligrams of fuel delivered in just 120 microseconds (0.00012 seconds) for enhanced efficiency and refinement.

The straight-six diesels are Euro 6d-Final compliant and meet demanding Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards, which govern nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, making Discovery among the first full-sized seven-seat premium SUVs in the world to be available with RDE2-certified diesels.

The range of new six-cylinder diesels comprises:

  • D250: 249PS (183kW), 3.0-litre six-cylinder MHEV, 570Nm of torque at 1,250-2,250rpm
  • D300: 300PS (221kW), 3.0-litre six-cylinder MHEV, 650Nm of torque at 1,500-2,500rpm

The D250 achieves low CO2 emissions from 216g/km and fuel efficiency up to 34.2mpg (8.3l/100km) * and is capable of 0-100km/h in 8.1 seconds (0-60mph in 7.6 seconds) *. As a result, this new engine provides superior performance and efficiency to the previous four-cylinder. The powerful D300 delivers acceleration from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds (0-60mph in 6.5 seconds).

New Discovery will be available with straight-six and four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engines:

  • P300: 300PS (221kW) 2.0-litre four-cylinder, 400Nm of torque at 1,500-4,500rpm
  • P360: 360PS (265kW) 3.0-litre six-cylinder MHEV, 500Nm of torque at 1,750-5,000rpm

As with the diesels, the new 3.0-litre straight-six Ingenium petrol engine features advanced aluminium construction and a low friction design for outstanding performance and efficiency. Enhanced acceleration and quicker responses go hand-in-hand with improved fuel economy to make the 360PS unit more powerful and efficient than the previous Si6 engine. The in-line six-cylinder Ingenium petrol with MHEV technology features both a conventional twin-scroll turbocharger and a state-of-the-art 48-volt electric supercharger. This innovation delivers immediate boost by spooling up to 65,000rpm in as little as half a second, providing the six-cylinder engine with torque response comparable with much bigger displacement engines. The co-ordination between the electric supercharger and twin-scroll turbocharger virtually eliminates turbo lag.

Further refinements include the use of Continuous Variable Valve Lift, which boosts power by helping the new engine breathe with maximum efficiency. Not only does this optimise performance and fuel economy, while also reducing emissions, it does so with the comfort and response customers expect from a Land Rover. Advanced MHEV technology uses a belt-integrated starter motor in place of the alternator to assist the petrol engine, while a 48-volt lithium-ion battery stores energy captured as the vehicle slows down. The four-cylinder P300 achieves CO2 emissions as low as 248g/km CO2 and fuel efficiency up to 25.7mpg (11.0l/100km) * and is capable of 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds (0-60mph in 6.9 seconds) *. The powerful new D360 delivers 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds (0-60mph in 6.2 seconds) * and achieves CO2 emissions as low as 236g/km with fuel consumption up to 27.0mpg (10.5l/100km) *, making it significantly faster and more efficient than the previous Si6 petrol.

A twin-speed transmission that provides a full set of low-range gear ratios is standard on the P360 petrol and optional on all other engines, while all New Discovery powertrains are supported by Land Rover’s advanced eight-speed automatic transmission. It combines lightweight construction and highly efficient operation to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while delivering the refinement and smooth gear changes associated with the Discovery family. The advanced transmission adapts to individual driving styles, so dynamic driving is automatically accompanied by more urgent gear changes.

Jaguar Land Rover is focused on reducing the environmental impact of both its vehicles and its operations. This has included reducing the CO2 emissions from building each car by 46 per cent compared to 2007 levels, and the purchase of zero-carbon electricity for all UK-based operations. Jaguar Land Rover is also working with the Carbon Trust across its UK manufacturing and production sites to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

The availability of Configurable Terrain Response allows drivers to fine-tune Discovery’s throttle mapping, gearbox shift points, steering and suspension settings to suit their preferences and requirements, so customers can personalise the driving experience for off-road driving.

For the first time, New Discovery features Wade Mode, accessed via Terrain Response 2, for use when fording deep water. The system automatically selects the appropriate settings for the throttle and suspension, including raising the vehicle to off-road height, and even gently applies the brakes when leaving Wade Mode to effectively ‘wipe’ the friction surfaces clean, so drivers experience full braking capability immediately. It works with Wade Sensing, which provides real-time wading depth visualisation using the 4x4i function within the Pivi Pro infotainment.

Discovery is now available with Land Rover’s innovative ClearSight Ground View system, which uses cameras in the front grille and door mirrors to provide a view of the obscured area directly ahead of the vehicle. It gives drivers an accurate representation of potential hazards with a 180-degree view on the central touchscreen, at up to 30km/h (18mph).

All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) is another example of Land Rover’s pioneering use of technology. It allows drivers to set a crawl speed ranging from 1.8km/h (1mph) up to 30km/h (19mph), freeing them to concentrate on negotiating difficult terrain while the system maintains the chosen speed. In addition, all-terrain performance is enhanced by Land Rover’s suite of advanced off-road driver assistance systems. Hill Descent Control (HDC), Gradient Release Control (GRC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC) and Roll Stability Control (RSC) are all standard.

New Discovery is the ultimate family-friendly SUV for the road, delivering exceptional long-haul comfort for seven people and a confidence-inspiring environment for the driver thanks to the excellent visibility provided by its Command Driving Position, enhanced controls and cutting-edge chassis technology, which deliver composed and responsive roadholding.

To achieve the perfect balance between composure and comfort, New Discovery features air suspension as standard, coupled with wide-spaced double-wishbone front suspension and an integral link set-up at the rear. The integral link provides softness when required, enhancing comfort and impact resistance, yet delivers greater stiffness when cornering for improved responses.

The air suspension provides a cushioned and relaxed ride comfort over uneven surfaces and also offers a wide range of adjustment for the ultimate convenience and capability. The advanced set-up can be lowered by up to 60mm, for easier loading access and to assist when hitching trailers, or raised by 75mm – increasing ground clearance to 283mm for effortless all-terrain progress. The Speed Lowering function cuts drag and enhances fuel economy by automatically reducing the ride height by 13mm at cruising speeds above 105km/h (65mph). In addition, Land Rover’s Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) technology features a variable ratio system that provides a more natural and responsive feel, remaining easy to manoeuvre at low speeds and offering a more surefooted feel at higher cruising speeds.

A series of advanced technologies support New Discovery’s dynamics at the same time as enhancing safety. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) allows the driver to take corners with greater confidence and security by monitoring all four wheels, to detect and counteract both understeer and oversteer. This intelligent system can apply braking force to the inside wheels and reduce engine torque to help tighten the cornering line and maintain the desired path.

New Discovery is fitted with Adaptive Dynamics, which uses advanced Continuous Variable Damping to monitor body movements up to 500 times per second and respond almost instantaneously to optimise control and comfort. The responsive hardware works in combination with changes to the roll bars and steering to provide enhanced on road driving dynamics.

Award-winning towing performance

Peerless towing capability is a core part of New Discovery’s breadth of capability. With a 3,500kg towing capacity* and state-of-the-art Advanced Tow Assist technology, New Discovery has the performance and technology to tow heavy loads easily. Using Advanced Tow Assist, drivers can use the central touchscreen and rotary Terrain Response selector to steer the vehicle when reversing. In this way, reverse parking manoeuvres can be completed with absolute confidence by following the responsive trajectory lines that appear on the central display.

New Discovery’s unrivalled towing ability is heightened by Trailer Stability Assist which enhances safety on the move by detecting trailer sway and gradually reducing the speed of the vehicle by cutting the engine and gently applying the brakes in order to restore control to the driver.

When fitted with the Electrically Deployable Tow Bar, New Discovery benefits from further advanced features for towing. Rear Height Adjust allows the driver to easily lower and raise the height of the rear of the vehicle, while Hitch Assist uses the surround cameras and the central touchscreen to help the driver guide the Tow Bar to the trailer mounting point. Finally, the Nose Load Measurement system provides a quick and easy check of the weight being applied to the Tow Bar using the central touchscreen or using the Remote app on a smartphone.
