Alfa Romeo Mito 2017: A Fresh Take on Italian Compact Sports Cars

First showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Mito has demonstrated its intentions to redefine the small sports car segment. Its renewed style, technical upgrades, and notable safety features are thoughtfully targeted at young, energetic drivers seeking a marriage of Italian flair and advanced motoring technology.

Evolved Design Language

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Mito introduces a renewed aesthetic, drawing clear design inspiration from its sibling, the eye-catching Giulia. A newly designed grille and the updated brand logo grace the Mito's exterior for the first time, signaling a coherent shift in Alfa Romeo's design language. The line-up includes three trim levels - Mito, Super, and Veloce - and two dedicated packages, Veloce and Lusso. Consumers are further spoiled for choice with nine body colors, and eight alloy wheel designs, including three fresh patterns for 16”, 17” and 18” wheels.

Engine and Performance

The powertrain options see an expansion with the introduction of a 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet engine, which promises spirited performance while maintaining commendable fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. It hits a top speed of 180 km/h and achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in 12.5 seconds. The Mito's comprehensive engine lineup also includes a 78 HP 1.4-litre engine, 140 HP or 170 HP 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo petrol engines with TCT automatic transmission, a 105 HP 0.9-litre Turbo TwinAir, and a 120 HP 1.4-litre LPG Turbo.

Technological Innovation and Connectivity

In a bid to meet growing consumer demand for in-car connectivity and integration with social channels, the Mito debuts with UConnect - a 5" touchscreen featuring Bluetooth interface, Aux-in connector, USB port, and voice controls. A digital radio version (DAB) and new Uconnect Live services are also on offer, allowing drivers to stay connected with an array of apps via a smartphone.

Trim Levels and Features

The base Mito trim showcases a refreshed front fascia, complete with satin door handles, 16” wheels, and body-color mirror caps. The sporty vibe is further enhanced with black fabric seats featuring the Alfa Romeo badge, an Alfa DNA selector, and a host of standard safety features. The Super trim ups the ante with more features including 16” alloy wheels, cruise control, an updated Uconnect infotainment system, and anthracite grey fabric and black eco-leather seats. Meanwhile, the top-tier Veloce trim adds sporty elements like a sports suspension, a double exhaust pipe, and 17'' alloy wheels, among other upgrades.

Targeting the Millennials

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Mito clearly targets younger drivers, specifically "Millennials", offering them the thrill of driving an Alfa Romeo with an array of modern features, while staying environmentally-friendly and exhibiting a distinct metropolitan style. It's an Alfa Romeo that aims to be a daily companion, adapting to their ever-changing directions and desires for independence and instant enjoyment.

Impressions and Outlook

On balance, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Mito manages to infuse its compact form with a generous amount of Italian style, performance, and technological sophistication. The wide range of customization options and the fresh 1.3 MultiJet engine make it an interesting proposition in the compact sports car segment. However, its appeal to Millennials will hinge on its ability to seamlessly blend performance, connectivity, and environmental friendliness. This blend of factors should be the cornerstone of its acceptance or rejection in this highly competitive market segment.
