AC Schnitzer Gives the 2013 BMW 4-Series Coupe a Lawful Makeover

In the realm of tuning, 2013 marked a year of distinction when the Association of German Vehicle Tuners (VDAT) tapped Aachen-based specialist, AC Schnitzer, to transform a BMW 428i Coupé into a concept police car. This venture was part of the "TUNE IT! SAFE!" initiative, backed by the German Police and the Federal Ministry for Transport, Construction and Road Development, intending to display that tuned safety and thrill can harmoniously coexist.

Upgraded Performance for Pursuits

Unlike its conventional counterpart, this rendition of the BMW 428i Coupé—dubbed the "ACS4 2.8i Coupé"—comes equipped with an enhanced engine, delivering a substantial 294 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. This powertrain revision allows the police concept vehicle to hit the 100 km/h mark from a standstill in just 5.7 seconds, ensuring high-speed pursuits pose no hurdle.

Striking Aesthetics: More Than Just a Patrol Car

The AC Schnitzer-tuned coupe's visual appeal doesn't fall short. Its rear sports an AC Schnitzer twin sports exhaust made from stainless steel, capped off with chromed "Evo Racing" tailpipe trims. The vehicle sits on AC Schnitzer Type VIII Lightweight Forged Wheels, wrapped in Hankook "Ventus S1evo" tyres, promising performance without compromising safety. To further accentuate the car's dynamic appeal, aerodynamic add-ons, including a front spoiler, rear diffuser, rear spoiler, and rear roof spoiler, have been added to the mix.

A Cabin Fit for Crime Fighting

The interior of the AC Schnitzer BMW 428i Coupé maintains a blend of practicality and comfort, featuring aluminium pedals, a "Black Line" handbrake handle, a footrest, and even a key holder. Velours floor mats polish off the law enforcement-themed interior styling. The police concept vehicle represents an exemplar of AC Schnitzer's tuning prowess, with all its modifications being commercially available and TÜV-approved.

A Functional Prototype for the Streets

In order to don the police car attire, AC Schnitzer partnered with FOLIATEC for the official decal and Hella for the special signalling system. The performance improvements, alongside the exterior alterations, were not purely for aesthetics or showmanship. The tuned BMW 428i Coupé showed efficiency improvements such as a better CO2 value per horsepower ratio and better engine performance. The Type VIII forged alloy wheels helped to reduce rotational forces, providing a notable upgrade in driving dynamics when paired with the adjustable racing suspension.

Standing Against Illegal Tuning: A Concept with a Cause

As part of the "TUNE IT! SAFE!" campaign, this concept car isn't merely an exhibition vehicle; it stands as a bold statement against illegal tuning and counterfeit parts. The transformed BMW 428i Coupé debuted at the Essen Motor Show in late 2013 and continues to be showcased across Germany, reflecting the fruitful collaboration of VDAT and AC Schnitzer in the fight for safe tuning.
